Midwest riders shine at Cyclocross Nationals

The return of Cyclocross Nationals to the Midwest brought out the region's best riders.  The event also featured tough conditions that changed from day to day and even race to race.  An ice storm hit just days before the event and ice coated all the trees at the course.  However, Thursday and Friday's temperatures above freezing made sections of the race course increasingly muddy.  Then temperatures dropped bringing frozen ruts that made negotiating the race course very difficult.

However, riders from our region posted excellent finishes including several national champions, many podium and top 10 finishes.  National champions include Anna Young in the 17-18 year old girl's race, Diane Ostenso in the 55-59 year old women's race and Bjorn Selander in the U23 Men's race.  Marko LaLonde also took home the win in the Singlespeed event.  Podium finishers include Samantha Schneider, Sarah Huang, Katie Antonneau, Ian Haupt, Patti Kaufmann, Bob Downs, Devon Haskell, and Elicia Hildebrand.  Tristan Schouten also had a strong ride to take 8th in the Elite Men's race.  See the Nationals Countdown page for all the info.

CrossVegas 2008

January 11, 2008 - After a tremendous first year in 2007 that saw 5,000 spectators and arguably the highest caliber field ever assembled in the U.S. converge on the evening of Interbike’s opening day, CrossVegas is back on the schedule for 2008. Boulder-based organizers, CrossVegas LLC, announced the event will be Wednesday September 24, once again capping off the show’s opening day.

Dubbed as “the international cyclocross season starts American-style in Las Vegas,” CrossVegas featured a field of elite men and women racing under the lights at Desert Breeze Soccer Complex, a short distance from the Strip and Interbike. Canadian Lyne Bessette won the women’s event while then-U.S. national champion, Ryan Trebon, took the men’s title.

Providing a peek into 2008 plans, CrossVegas co-promoter Brook Watts announced that a race for tradeshow attendees is one of the new additions for year two. “There’s obviously a lot of folks in the industry who race cyclocross and we’ve heard many pleas for a “Wheelers and Dealers” race to start the evening. We’re ironing out details but expect full information by late spring.”

January 19 Cross Race in Viroqua

In Viroqua they are trying to keep the season going to unnatural lengths. Cross is the most fun, why not have a race in January when the weather is at it's worst? It is also a great opportunity to check out the sport of Cyclocross at it's best (or worst) in January, like a Euro... This race is a part of Viroqua's winter festival, and includes a 5k and a fitness walk the same morning, so there should be some spectators coming out to watch the icy run-up! Maybe we will have some snow/rain? FLYER
