Week 9: Wizard Cross
This year’s Team Magnus Wizard Cross took place at Hiestand Park on Madison’s east side which was a new venue for the WCA series. Although it was a grey December day the temperatures rose into the upper 30s which is better than might happen this time of year which helped bring out about 200 racers. Home to a great sledding hill this race is probably most noted for ripping off rider’s legs by going up and down this hill in 3 equally painful ways. Many riders were heard to say that this was the hardest race of the year. Whether it was THE hardest or just down right pain inducing is up to the racers to decide but it certainly was no easy ride in the park. Hills weren’t the only tricky element though – to keep it interesting there was a section of off camber turns which thanks to rain on Saturday made what might have just been an interesting feature into a challenging to ride feature. Oh yeah, and it would be wrong not to mention the two very fast downhills straight down the sledding hill (which lead to the aforementioned leg ripping uphills).
